Today, tourism has become an economic engine capable of generating employment, offering subsistence opportunities and thereby contributing to alleviating poverty and promoting inclusive development.
For this reason, the year 2017 has been declared by the United Nations General Assembly as the International Year of Sustainable Tourism for Development.
«It is a unique opportunity to build a more responsible and committed tourism sector, which can capitalize on its immense potential in terms of economic prosperity, social inclusion, peace and understanding, and preservation of culture and the environment.», said the Secretary General of the UNWTO, Taleb Rifai.
What keys must citizens take to become sustainable tourists?
1. When you are organizing the trip, choose suppliers that offer quality guarantees as well as respect for human rights and the environment.
2. Use natural resources sparingly, they are scarce goods.
3. Minimize the generation of waste, they are a source of pollution.
4. When you have to dispose of waste, do so in the cleanest way possible within the destination.
5. In a natural space, make sure that the only footprint you leave behind is that of your footwear.
6. If you visit sensitive ecosystems, such as coral reefs or jungles, find out how to do so to cause the least possible impact and not degrade them.
7. When buying gifts and souvenirs, choose local products. You will favor the local economy and cultural diversity.
8. Do not acquire flora and fauna protected by the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES), or products derived from said species. It is a crime and contributes to its extinction.
9. At your destination, enjoy getting to know the culture, customs, gastronomy and traditions of the local populations.
10. Try to contribute with your presence to the development of responsible and sustainable tourism, building a healthier and more supportive planet with your trip.
By following these recommendations, tourists will contribute to preserving the biological wealth of the Earth and improving the development opportunities of many people.
And you, are you a sustainable tourist?
