The large production of this material, its excessive use and the length of time it takes to decompose, make plastic a great threat to our planet.
It is made with petroleum, and when it was invented in the 19th century it was revolutionary because of its low cost, its ease of being molded, and because it was electrically insulating or waterproof, but they did not know the problems that could arise two centuries later.
If you stop for a moment right now and look around you, you will surely see many objects made with this material, and we are not only going to objects made entirely of plastic, but also objects that contain some plastic, such as a polyester garment ( containing plastic microfibers). Have you stopped to think about it?
The big problem with plastic is that it is not a biodegradable material. Therefore, the only thing that can be done with it is to recycle it into other objects.
And what happens when plastic is not recycled? Here comes the problem!
When plastic is not recycled, it passes into seas and oceans where marine animals ingest it.. In this case, either they are large animals that have their bodies full of plastics or if their size is small, it can cause death.
This means that many of the fish we are currently consuming may be contaminated by plastics.
What can we do to avoid plastic in homes?
Although it is a difficult task, if we are aware of the problem, we can largely avoid the use of plastic by practicing these tricks:
- Don't buy more plastic lunch boxes and buy glass ones. With this, we are not telling you to throw away the plastic ones you have, but to use them until they break so as not to generate new waste and on your next purchase, choose glass.
- Do not use transparent film to cover food. Store them in glass tappers.
- Use kitchen cloths free of microfibers.
- Choose kitchen utensils made in bamboo, wood or stainless steel.
- Replaces brooms and brushes (when they break down) for some of wood with vegetable fibers.
- clothespins, that are made of wood.
- Do not use plastic bottles, always glass or stainless steel.
- When you replace your toothbrush, choose one of bamboo with vegetable bristles.
