Every day we are consuming a multitude of products that, used improperly, can become a veritable chemical arsenal: these are the emerging contaminants and we can find them in medicines, cosmetics, shampoos...
What are emerging contaminants?
They are a series of products increasingly abundant whose chemical formulations or the interactions they cause with other substances and/or compounds, cause damage to the environment and health that had not been taken into account until now. Given this situation, environmental and health legislation does not control them, but thanks to new research they are beginning to be considered.
How do emerging contaminants affect us?
Its consequences can be very diverse, although not all of its effects are yet known because they are under investigation.
The impact of certain types of medications has already begun to be perceived in natural environments such as estrogens from birth control pillss cause the feminization of males in various species of fish and amphibians; antidepressants they reduce the birds' chances of survival in winter; and certain anti-inflammatories cause injuries in birds.
Another clear example is that of the microplastics, used in various products, such as industrial abrasives, scrubs, facial creams, toothpaste, shampoos, gels, baby products, insect repellents, sun creams, cosmetics, clothing, etc. Microplastics are present in all seas and oceans on the planet and constitute a threat to human health and the environment due to their ability to accumulate chemical compounds and toxins.
How to combat emerging contaminants?
Citizen awareness is key to reducing the presence and effects of emerging pollutants on the environment and health.
As with products like wet wipes, nothing other than toilet paper should be flushed down the toilet.
In the case of the medicines, in addition to reducing their consumption for what is essential, they must be deposited in the SIGRE points from pharmacies for correct treatment and recycling.
Investment in research and analysis systems is another of the great actions that should be taken into account.
In addition, Legislation should advance to establish controls and limits on these substances, as is already done with others, and that the producing companies adopt methods to reduce, eliminate or replace them.
